Teeth Whitening

Here at Smiles by Bigelow, we are experts when it comes to teeth whitening. We use the best techniques to ensure you end up with glowing white teeth.

Many people consider white teeth attractive and it’s everyone’s wish to have crispy white teeth. Teeth coloration is a very common challenge. It mainly occurs as a result of poor oral hygiene while some people have naturally discolored teeth.

Teeth whitening is a simple procedure, although the complexity depends on the severity of the problem. At times, some people want to eliminate the natural discoloration of their teeth. That makes the procedure a little more complex. Teeth color is often determined by the color of your dentin and the thickness of the enamel. The enamel is the outer surface of the teeth, while the dentin is the surface under it.

Common Causes of Teeth Coloration

As mentioned earlier, the main cause of teeth coloration is poor dental hygiene. Food deposits left on your teeth after you are done eating need to be removed immediately. Brushing and flossing are not completely effective at removing these deposits. This means that you should visit us regularly for thorough cleanings.

Smoking tobacco is a notorious cause of colored teeth as well. Tobacco causes tartar which attaches itself to the enamel. People who smoke heavily will end up with colored teeth, even if they brush and floss regularly.

Colored drinks also cause teeth coloration, although this can be avoided if you brush your teeth immediately you’ve had a drink. Coffee, tea, and red wine are some of the drinks that will easily cause teeth coloration if taken regularly.

A layer named the pellicle forms gradually on the teeth if they are not cleaned properly over time. The layer becomes observable as teeth coloration over time. A tooth whitening procedure will often seek to remove the pellicle layer.

Teeth Whitening Procedure

The procedure simply involves deeply cleaning your teeth and getting rid of all stains and coloration on them. Our dentist will brush and floss your teeth thoroughly to ensure all deposits or films are removed. Our dentists can easily reach and clean areas of your teeth that you wouldn’t be able to reach properly.

A protective film will be placed over your gums before a whitening paste is placed on your teeth. The paste has hydrogen peroxide which removes the coloration from your teeth. The whitening paste is activated with a laser beam.

You may need a couple of appointments with our dentist before your teeth are completely white. The exact time taken depends on the complexity of the problem. Proper dental hygiene and getting occasional professional dental cleanings will ensure your teeth stay white and healthy. We recommend coming to visit us twice a year or so.
